There has been a lot of negativity around the UK this year. Scroll through the news or social media, and it can feel as though we are stuck in a permanent downward spiral. Negativity undoubtedly sells, and it often dominates the headlines.
For me, a powerful antidote came a few weekends ago in Sheffield, where I was visiting with my son for his university open day. What we saw was a powerful reminder of what the UK still does exceptionally well. The quality of academic facilities, the strength of links with leading technology and engineering businesses, and the enthusiasm of students from across the world who have chosen to study here in the UK were genuinely uplifting. Add in a vibrant city and the Peak District on the doorstep, and it left me feeling quietly optimistic about the future.
That sense of perspective has also been important in investment markets this year. Over half of our clients at Holden & Partners invest in sustainable portfolios. The sector has, certainly in the first half of the year, faced challenges from political headwinds and the rotation into defensive stocks. More recently however, returns have begun to improve, and we are also seeing encouraging signs among smaller environmentally focused businesses, particularly in the start-up space.

Another recurring theme this year has been the enduring value of professional advice. We continue to see situations where, in an attempt to save fees, people risk making decisions that could have significant unintended consequences. We’ve stopped some clients from making decisions that could have created considerable tax liabilities they were unaware of. With careful planning, such outcomes were avoided.
On a personal note, time really does seem to fly. In the coming weeks, I will be giving my eldest son his first driving lesson, which hardly feels possible. Earlier this year, we also enjoyed a memorable family road trip through the United States, an experience that offered both perspective and a timely reminder of the importance of taking time out and making memories.

For Holden & Partners, 2025 has been an important year. We’ve invested in new technology to improve efficiency and improve the advice process, introduced our rebrand and published our latest Impact Report, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to responsible business and sustainable investing. The team took part in various charitable endeavours, such as walking the 50km Thames Path Challenge and organising an office Master Chef event.
We were proud to be recognised once again as a City Wire Top 100 firm and VouchedFor Top-rated Financial Adviser. We also saw Tom Hartley receive an individual paraplanning award, reflecting the quality and dedication of our wider team.
Most importantly, I would like to thank every client who has chosen to place their trust in us. Whether you have been with us for many years or joined us more recently, your confidence in us is never taken for granted. It is a privilege to support you and your families through both calm and turbulent times.
There is no doubt that the world continues to feel uncertain. But if this year has reinforced anything for me, it is the value of long-term thinking, sound advice, strong values and human connection.
Here is to a positive and purposeful 2026.
