Ice Break Warning.Reports Stuart Ryan, 16th August 2010Recently an iceberg four times the size of Manhattan broke away from the Petermann Glacier in Greenland and could potentially drift into the shipping lanes of the North Atlantic. The iceberg is roughly one hundred square miles in area with enough water stored within it to keep the Hudson River in New York flowing for over two years. This is the largest piece of ice to detach from an Arctic glacier since 1962 and follows on from the six warmest months on record leading to the belief that glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are melting faster than predicted. Many scientists agree that Arctic ice can be viewed as the canary in the coal mine with regards to warnings on the climate. The ice has been drifting in the sea lane between Canada and Greenland since the 5th August and may block the channel, break into smaller pieces or hit land.
