Discretionary Investment Management

At outset many people think that having a stock broker or portfolio manager who looks after their investments on a discretionary basis is sufficient to meet their financial goals. However, to many Investment Houses and Banks, a client may be a small cog in a very large wheel. A client can feel that they are lost in the crowd, as if the fund manager is talking jargon, or that they do not really understand the risks involved in what they are doing.

At Holden & Partners we have a number of clients with portfolios in excess of £1m, or combinations of portfolios in excess of £1m, who use us to help them manage their portfolio managers. Our role is to be their eyes and ears in the process and help them to understand, evaluate and manage not only their own objectives and strategy, but also the investment managers themselves. In this way we are able to help our clients make their investments more relevant to their personal circumstances, taking into consideration not only their changing lives but also their tax position and attitude to risk.

The typical annual charge for this type of service ranges from £3,000 to £15,000 per annum depending on the work levels involved and the amounts of money under management, which tends to represent less than 0.5% of the clients assets. This process can lead to savings well in excess of our fees, because of the decisions taking as a result with the investement strategy and more obviously from our pro active tax planning.  The client feels connected to their money and involved in the investment decisions which faciltates a two way dialogue and in our experience a more effective process.

At Holden & Partners we are an advisory firm and not discretionary.
