Ethical Investment
Ethical or Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) aims to maximise both financial return and social good. It is driven by personal values and concerns about society as a whole.
SRI investment funds generally invest in companies that:
- are environmentally responsible;
- support diversity in the work place; and
- have policies that increase product safety and quality.
Companies with interests in armaments, oppressive regimes, nuclear power, gambling, pornography, tobacco and vivisection are generally excluded.
In addition, positive screens are often applied – for instance companies with good employee relations records, long-term commitment to the environment and those that produce products and offer services that will be of benefit to the community, are favoured.
